Tomb Raider Legend
2006
Overview
This is the newest and most beautiful Tomb Raider game so far. It takes players back to the tombs and to a lovely new city as well. The story is completely new and features a new background of the Lady Croft. While some may argue that this game makes more of a joke of the series than the ill fated Angel of Darkness, In my opinion it is a worthy addition to the Tomb Raider collection. It should also be mentioned that Crystal Dynamics is in control of the series as Core was fired after the demise of Angel of Darkness. It should also be mentioned that Crystal Dynamics completely changed Lara Croft's original Bio. She was once nonexistant in her parent's world and now they're closer than people in bread lines. It really ruins Lara's image and changes her whole life. This is a definite down side.
Improvements
This new game features a whole new engine, brand new control functions in which the old Inventory system was discarded. Players no longer have to enter the inventory to select a weapon or use a flare. Instead, the Dpad is used to quickly navigate Lara's inventory. By pressing up Lara will use a medipack. Pressing down will change weapons. Pressing right will have Lara use her binoculars. By pressing another button players can use the RAD mode of the binocs, which allows players to see what kind of trap type or object type it is that she's looking at. By pressing Left Lara will turn on her Personal Light Source, which illuminates dark places.
Lara will not carry a boat load of items in her backpack anymore. Now she will only carry 1 weapon on her back and if you want to switch simply pick up a new weapon.
As with the slick new controls players won't have to line up each and every one of Lara's jumps, and makes jumping more fun and fluent.
Gameplay
The gameplay in Tomb Raider Legend is constant. There are hardly any 'boring' moments in the game, or times when a task seems tedious (with the exception of the awfully long motorcycle segments) Combat is fluent, enjoyable, and has many different options, rather than simply jumping side to side while shooting like mad.
Everything is smoothly done from swimming to swinging on vines. It's a vast improvement over the past games. While they were not difficult and enjoyable themselves, this new system works much better with Analog Stick control.
Also new is the fact that you cannot save at any spot. You will come across checkpoints in the game and can manually save at any of them.
There is only one problem with Gameplay in Tomb Raider Legend and that is because the game is so short. It can easily be completed in 10 hours, which is too short for a Tomb Raider game. I would suggest that future titles be longer and more complex as the traps and foes were easily defeated, like the game itself.
Another nag is that Zip and Alistair, the two 'ass'istants back at Lara's manor, constantly chime in and spoon feed the player what is going on in the story and treat Lara like a child, which is a very big downer. It used to be that Lara was isolated and knew more about what she was doing, but now she's as clueless as a blonde at moments (that and Alistair has a problem with correcting every little historical reference and yelling in the ear piece)

Weapons
Lara finally makes good use of her dual pistols in Tomb Raider Legend and they can be upgraded by means of collectable secrets. Lara can also find two types of machine guns, a grenade launcher, and shotgun.
Secrets
A whole new secret system (albiet closely related to that of Tomb Raider 2) has players collecting three types of collectables; Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Of the three, Bronze is most easily found, Silver is less commonly found and harder to find, and Gold is one of a kind and the most difficult of any to find. Rewards range from Outfits to pistol upgrades.
Vehicles
Lara takes control of two types of Ducati motorbikes in Tomb Raider Legend. Control is arcade style and easily done. Of the three segments, two of them are long mini games that can range in how long they last.
